I'm working on getting my 1977 corvette running and I noticed this electrical part (relay?) hanging under the dash, close to the fuse panel.
This part is very hot to the touch whenever I have the battery connected. My questions are: what is this part and is it normal for it to get so hot, even when the car is off?
The wires that plug into this part are green, black, and red.
Is it okay if I remove this relay? I've been worried about starting a fire and I've been disconnecting the battery each time after I work on the car. This relay gets so hot I can barely touch it.
It is the horn relay... for sure. What concerns me is that the harness above the fuse box should be wrapped. The connector for the relay should come out of the main branch right above the fuse box. Someone has been in there fixing something for sure.
You might consider pulling the box away from the firewall and re-wrapping the harness with some harness tape (not electrical tape either)
Thanks for the help guys. I will remove the relay and re-wrap the harness. A previous owner had added an after-market radio and messed with the wiring some.
