Default Spreader bar fan clearance.

I'm installing a speed direct spreader bar for stock application and was wondering how much clearance I should be seeing behind the fan blades?
I called tech service and was told it was close, but could not get a definition of what close is. What would a safe amount be to allow for any flexing of the fan/frame based on anyone's experience?
Thanks
Bob

With the engine off the fan will be as close as it can possibly be. The blades straighten as rpm increase so IMO, a 1/4 inch should be enough.

Thanks for the quick response. That's approx what I should see when I tighten everything up. I had visions of the fan hitting at 5000rpms and was concerned.
Thanks

The blades don't flex on the stock GM fans with a fan clutch. The fan free wheels until the air temp hits either 180 for base L-48 GM fan clutches or 195 degrees for the L-82 GM fan Clutch. Of course, non GM fan Clutchs/Fans and flex fans are different.

Let's just say, if it does flex....it will flex away from the spreader bar. He didn't specify which fan he had but thanks for the info

I have the stock gm clutch/fan setup. I'll post a pic when I get in the garage tomorrow.

Yes, I will use it as a known std when I get mine bolted up. Do you notice a difference with the bar installed?

I'm going to be doing this shortly as well.

If its not to much trouble could somebody post a close up picture of the mount on the control arm. To me the bolts going through the arm are going to be to short to accept the bracket and put the nut back on. Did anybody have to replace the bolts due to length?

TIA.

Do you have a lot of alignment shims? The bracket is only .140 thick.

Pass side:

Pass side with bar bracket sitting on the bolts:

Not alot of thread left when bracket installed.
Fresh alignment, Tracks straight and true.

At the risk of a thread hijack, how much clearance do you have between the bar and the front of the pulley? Doesn't look like much from here, but I guess it's enough............

You have a lot more shims than I do. I would think as long as you have 2-3 threads sticking out of the nut you are good.

Its not much but has not been a problem for the last 5-6 years-no issues.

1/4 inch between the bar and the power steering pulley and 1/2 inch between the bar and the fan blades. Plenty of thread on the control arm threads-again-no issue.

That's my issue. I don't think the threads will even come out of the bracket once installed. Might just slide a longer bolt in.

That bolt, where the bracket bolts on, is it anything special? Long shoulder? Odd size?

I'd think a nice grade 5 bolt of the same diameter would suffice.

Maybe give speed direct a call on the bolt question.

I have a two groove power steering pulley (single groove pulleys are about $100, so I'm kind do stuck with it). The pulley limits how far back the spreader bar can go. I had very little clearance between the fan and the spreader bar. It was fine at idle and cruise, but when I reved it, I could hear a the fan kiss the spreader bar intermittently. A 1/8" spacer between the w/p pulley and the fan clutch gave me all the clearance I needed.
Here is the spacer I made.

This shows the spacer mounted. I painted it black, so you have to look closely. There is no contact between the fan and spreader bar.

Pete, Have a pic of the bracket where its mounted on the control arm by chance?

Nice job on the spacer. Was it just a big washer that you drilled?

By any chance would you have a scetch with dim's for the spacer.
Thanks
