i have a 73 automatic turbo 400 car but when i bought it i had to replace the frame..but all i could find at the time was a 68 4 speed frame for 200.00 from a guy i knew so i did it...now heres the problem as you most know 4 speed frames dont have a removable crossmember and automatics do..so now i need to relocate the crossmember for the 700r4.SSo should i just cut out the old one and make a new one which i kind of already did,i made a removable and adjustable one for the car awhile back so i could just make brackets up to fit the car,and just cut the old one right at the frame and just box it in...any help would be appreciated.
Re: need help...trans. crossmember problem,with 700r4 (Ed T)
im hoping ill cut most of it out with a sawzaw and finish up edges with a cutoff wheel i use for exuast work.and the chassis i got was a friend who ownes a junkyard in the area he had it for awhile just wanted to get rid of it.

Re: need help...trans. crossmember problem,with 700r4 (QuickVet)
Pat,
My 74 was originally a 4 speed car and now has a 700-R4. This means that to pull the tranny I have to pull the motor for lack of a removable crossmember . My best buddy and master mechanic took a TH350 trans mount and modified it to work with the 700-R4. I can't remember exactly how he did it but I remember something about it being turned upside down I think. Lemme know if you want to know more and I can go to the storage and take pictures of it for you.
Re: need help...trans. crossmember problem,with 700r4 (Stingy74)
Here are the pics:
I would have captioned them all but i'm late for a beer drinking session! The mount is from my 79 Corvette which had a TH350. I also use a poly mount for a TH350. I initally was only going to take pics from under the car but for the time it took I pulled the mount out. Hope these pics help you out.

406, I have a 700r4 in an original muncie car, '72, and I modified the trans mount to fit the tranny...worked fine....had to remove tranny recently for fixing, so rather than do the engine again....I cut the crossmember out of there, exhaust too , with a sawzall, then had welded some 8" of 2" angle iron on the removeable member, and a flange on top which is nothing more than to rest the cross support on while two 1/2 dia ~5" bolts with locknuts are inserted into the frame 'tabs' still welded onto the frame rails...
that cross support is nothing more than a tranny mount....adds little if anything to critical support for handling, not enough to notice anyway...figger the auto supports are held in by only 3 bolts/side...the two 3/8 bolts going in from bottom only hold it vertically, and ~5" bolts going sideways are taking most of the strain....
Re: need help...trans. crossmember problem,with 700r4 (pats406nitrovette)
Bowtie Overdrive sells a complete crossmember to mount the TH700R4.
They also have a bracket that allows to mount the transmission. The crossmember is approx. $200 and the bracket is $80... http://www.700r4.com/
They don't have the bracket for sale on their webpage but they do have it. I bought the bracket for my TKO (same mounting position as TH700)
Re: need help...trans. crossmember problem,with 700r4 (pats406nitrovette)
Pat,
I had mine cut at ~45 degree angles to the outside of the exhaust holes, then they welded some flanges to make it bolt on...cause we couldn't get the 6 speed out without pulling the motor.
So when we painting my Vette ;)
If you need someone to do the welding, lemme know I'll get you in touch with the shop that did my work, I think they are in the Somerville area off 287
