My buddy stopped over with his 62 tonight. It has a 70 LT1 in it. The fuel pump is leaking but it was too dark to see if it's rebuildable or just replaceable? Did these have a fuel return line on them? I don't know if the gas tanks on the 62 are like the C3's? It's feeding a Holley 780 dual feed carb. Also what are the lifter spec's for setting hot? I have one book that says .030"/.030" someone else said .024"/.030" which is correct?
Thanks this car is a blast to drive with a 4 speed and 3.55's :D
Gary
Gary, LT-1's used a Holley carb originally and didn't have a fuel return line. As for the lifter specs, search the NCRS board archives for posts by Duke Williams. He's got the prescribed method and clearances.

Gary,
While I don't know what is installed on the engine now, the original fuel pump for 1970-1972 LT-1 was not intended to be rebuilt. There ARE people doing this, but I would be reluctant to have one on any of my cars. The original carburetor for all three years was a dual feed, 780 cfm Holley without a return line... Just as you observed.

The factory valve lash settings for the 3972178 (aka LT-1) camshaft are .024" intake/.030" exhaust. To be honest, these are too loose in my opinion (and the opinions of several guys much sharper than me ;) ). In addition, there is also an issue with the exhaust valve on this camshaft not being on the base circle at TDC which is where you would normally make the lash adjustment. There is a procedure that was put together by John Hinckley and Duke Williams that was originally posted on the NCRS Discussion Board that addresses these points. If you have trouble locating it in the archives, let me know and I'll forward a copy to you.
Thanks guys,
I pass the info along to my friend. He did tell me he set them at 30/30 hope that's not a problem. I found the info for him in one of my old vette manuals. I would just install a new ac pump on the car.
This car is a blast and good looking too-maroon/black. He had th eoriginal motor in the car when he got it about 30 years ago but a vette shop left it outside while working on it. The problem was it only had water in it and it was Winter! My friend even told the shop about it before he dropped it off. Well they went around a bit because the block was cracked after sitting outside for a while and the shop gave him a crate motor they had. It was still in the crate and turned out to be a 70 LT1! Not a bad trade for a 327-250 motor- but not original
He said he smells gas fumes from around the rear of the car, but I wonder if part of what he smells is the pump leaking?
Thanks,
 Gary
