From: Graceland in a Not Correctly Restored Stingray
Unspent fuel igniting in the exhaust system on what is referred to as "overrun". This results in the flames you see when this occurs in many a racing car. ...and on the occasional C2/C3 with sidemount headers, if sufficiently stout.
