Default Where does Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor go?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 1977 Corvette.

A mechanic suggested that I replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. I bought the part online: ACDelco, part # G1852:

Amazon.com: ACDelco G1852 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor: Automotive Amazon.com: ACDelco G1852 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor: Automotive

However, the mechanic is unclear where and how to install the part now that I've purchased it. Can anyone tell me where this installs (pictures would be very helpful)? Also, can anyone tell me what this piece is for?

I'm curious in particular if this will do anything to reduce overall heat of the engine. My water temperature is staying around 200, but I've found the inside of the car (especially near the feet) to be quite hot. Just replaced the fan clutch, hoping that will help.

Thanks in advance,

Original location for the temp sender on my '80 L48 was in the Driver-side cylinder head.

When I installed my headers, I moved the (new) sender to the front intake passage; atop the inlet that is over the thermostat (in one of the ports that once was occupied by a thermal sensor for emissions). It spikes a little when first warming up (maybe 10 degrees F max) but gets a consistent reading. If I recall correctly, I went with a replacement sender from Dr Rebuild.

the part you bought only "senses" coolant temperature which connects to your gauge.

Mechanic who is unclear about installation? Find a new mechanic

Either between the 1st and 3rd cylinders on the drivers side or 6 and 8 on the passengers side if its on the heads. Most chevy engines have almost identical heads and its easy to swap them on accident.

If niether of those places the try on the intake manifold on the drivers side.

The plastic piece covers the water temp wire connector. The cut out allows you to just slide it on the sending unit.

Thanks in advance,
200* is not abnormal for the stock installation. 220* would even be normal.
Sounds like you need a different mechanic.
1. you don't need a new sensor
2. if you did the mechanic should know where it goes.
3. your running temp is normal and not controlled by the sensor and your mechanic should know that.

Did this "mechanic" tell you it would reduce the heat? If he did he's an idiot. You need to stay as far away from him as you can. And make him reimburse you for that sensor.
