Intermittent starter motor problem
A little description of what I did and happened.
Today I was looking at a way to put some heatshielding between the starter motor and the header. Not sure if that has something to do with it, but in the afternoon when trying to start the engine, nothing happened. The lights on the dash were lit and everything, but no sound from the starter. I went to check things, but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. I then loosened up the big nut on the terminal with the battery cable and turned the terminals of the smaller red wires a little, since I thought they were too far back. First instances it started fine.
Then the same issue again. Thightened the big nut some more and it seemed to be fine the first 4 starts thereafter.
Is this a preliminary to a starter issue or what ?
I want to make sure since I have a lot of EFI tuning to do and don't want to get stranded somewhere because of some stupid starter motor issue.
Thanks
Had a similar problem on my '75, but the car went dead, no lights or buzzer. Turned out to be the orange wire at the starter that goes to the ignition switch. It was fatigued from being too close to the exhaust or maybe long cranking. Anyhow the strands of wire inside the insulation had failed over time between the fusible link and the starter. Check the red wire in that area and the links at the starter and firewall, other side of the fuse block.
