I bought a new one to replace the cracked dashboard on my '82, I spent several hours today preparing it for installation and so far I'm unimpressed with the quality. I started with drilling the holes for the instrument cluster and it was a pretty lousy fit. Then I fitted the glove box door, I'm going to have to modify the striker mount or else it's going to be a really loose fit. I'm dreading fitting the dashboard itself to the car. Have any of you had good results with a dash replacement? On a more positive note, the new carpet made by auto custom carpets fits beautifully.
Decades ago I did a similar dash into a '70 GOT/Lemans, the overall shape/concept is about identical to your dash.....
and it fit beautifully, much better than even MY expectations....
Just Dashes from out in California was the supplier/maker.....
today I dunno what......but can say that it's a lot harder than my '72 which is just a top cover then two bottom pieces.....
I've heard good things about them, but for some reason I forgot about them when I ordered my new dash. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow, I'm sure I can return the one I've got. I almost would rather have my cracked dash the fits than this one.
I put in a new dash from Willcox, it fit in the car fine, no problem, had to drill a couple holes and that was all. Fitting the AC vents, headlight switch, wiper switch, that was a whole different matter. It took a Lot of work to get that stuff to fit. Haven't finished the glove box yet but there are issues there as well
A new dashboard for a 78-82 is very expensive, at least in my eyes it is. When vendors are aware that the piece does not fit without significant modifications why do they continue to sell it? I would think that they would be going back to their suppliers and trying to work through the difficulties so that a first-rate product can be delivered to a purchaser. Those assemblies are close to $500 and I hate the thought of getting one and then having to rework it so that it fits well enough to use. It should work pretty much out of the box.
I need one for my 80, but I dread the thought of paying such an amount for it and then having to modify it when it should already be close to correct for my car.
