I have a very common problem while running the AC, it REALLY puts a drag on the engine when the compressor is running. I know this is common for the older cars, but if there is a way to improve this, I would like to do it. Any body ever been able to ease the drag on the motor ?
I went to a Sanden rotory compressor and now my engine barely even notices when it comes on
THAT and running DPFI on it, lets the computer deal with it, there ARE idle control solenoids that block/nudge the idle up a tad on the sharks, to keep engine speed the same, activated by the compressor wire.....
Back in the late 70's/early 80's I used a vacuum switch that I believe was sold by JC Whitney on my A6 compressors that easily wired into the AC current side of the switch and you used a T connection into a carb vacuum line. As the engine accelerated and the vacuum dropped the ac current to the compressor was interrupted which disengaged the compressor operation under acceleration only-it was a simple ingenious solution that worked great. As soon as the engine went back to part or full vacuum the compressor engaged normally.
Found this on youtube with no specifics but obviously it still can be done:
Chevrolet used a similar setup on some of their lower horsepower engines in the 70's. My (then brand new) 73 Vega GT would do that. I really liked that car.
