Default Quick question about stock exhaust

When i get the headers installed my bubba dad wants to keep the piping from the catalitic conveter back because he says the pipes are "still good" and the mufflers are "brand new" Would there be a performance lose if i kept that piping from after the cat back and keep the stock mufflers. I really don't want to do some half assed job with a half new exhaust system. How can i convince him? And what size is the original stock exhaust? I want to put 2.5" piping on there

Dont listen to "Bubba" ..Go for 2.5 ,You will probably beef up the engine in the future and then youll need the flow..
Flowmaster 40s or 50s and the future is wide open..

The stock exhaust for the 1979 is 2 1/2". But I do not understand how headers, replacing the front Y-pipe, are going to be siamesed into the cat con. That will take some fancy pipe bending, cutting and welding.

no no... the cat is definately going to go.. He wanted to keep the piping that came after the cat to the mufflers on for some stupid reason but it's alot easier taking it all off and just running new pipes all the way from the headers to the mufflers...

I still do not understand. You have a front Y-pipe and a rear Y-pipe with a cat con in between. You cannot retain the rear Y-pipe to mufflers if you remove the cat con, unless you use a "test" pipe to replace. You cannot connect headers to the cat con. If you try to retain the rear stock mufflers you will find they are inseparable from the rear Y-pipe: once clamped they generally have to cut off. So really you are looking at a true dual system with headers and new mufflers....Which is probably what you want ;) .

Good luck with your new true-dual system! And get advice from others on mufflers. I am still stock. And actually prefer it that way. But to each his/her own!

my dad and i put headers on our 79 L82. we had someone custom bend piping back to the origial factory mufflers. we did this in ***1981****. some surface rust after 20 years but still in place and in fairly good shape. the stock mufflers are 'burned' out now. had a great distictive rumbling sound too. so i have a true dual exhaust set up and still using the factory mufflers :chevy
