How much?

With the stock valve springs in my '74 454, does anyone know what the max lift they could take?, I'm thinking of a mild,(cheaper$) .485 comp cam. I know, it would be better to get the whole cam kit but, I'm still tossing around the idea...

why would you install a new cam with springs that are 40 years old regardless of the lift?

Don't ever take the cheap shortcut - you'll pay for it later. It's better to save your money until you can do it right.

Maybe I'm getting in a hurry to do something to it. I'd rather have the full cam package, while the heads are off do some port clean up on them.

I read up....then went for it..."......."porting, matching-trimming intake and exhaust gaskets to openings.......reassembled everything and the engine idled 90 rpm faster....(never touched the carb)

Yes....impossible.....but it happened!
