I have been on the forum since it started and see the same questions over and over. Most Topics are very interesting and create good exchange of info. However, I have noticed a trend of Very basic stuff repeated quite often. Many of these can be answered by simply reading the following readily available material: THE OWNER's manual, The GM service manual and/or assenbly manual. AND there is a Corvette Black Book that gives a lot of production data, engine numbers, dates and tons of trivial stuff. I see a lot of money spent on cars and amamazed at how many people don't have the most basic info at hand. ALL of the above publications cost less than $100. Now I am NOTcriticizing anyone... Just passing along some usefull information that will enhance your corvette savvy. There are no stupid questions...
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (silvervetteman)
all true Silver, thing is, most all of our cars have no owner's manuals with them...it's a rarity to find one on any used car...ususally about the first thing tossed when original owner cleanes out the glove box....
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (mrvette)
Repro Owners manuals are everywhere for $10. Hundreds of them on E BAY Originals are a bit more. All of the items I listed are invaluable when you need them. I think the assembly manual is a must. It shows a breakdown of EVERY part and assembly. It does not break down engines, transmissions etc. JUST the car.. SO you can see how that door handle goes together or how the vacuum system is supposed to be routed. A GREAT tool!
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (silvervetteman)
think you're missing the point silver...sure, repo's are available, and most have the manuals, but it doesn't hurt to post. Think the most mundane Q's, people have the answer, but they post it anyway, just for the sake of discussion...no discussion, no forum.
Doesn't bother me to reread Q's that were posted time and time again
Your point is well taken Silverman. Sometimes I ask questions that I think I know the answer to but it helps to have someone with tons more experience or who has done it before confirm things. But to each his (or her) own.
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (R. Bruno)
I certainly didn't mean it in a derogitory manor .. I only wanted make people aware of some very useful stuff. I realize the forum needs ALL of the input and questions. I consider manuals and books as tools. I always answer as many posts as I can and very often refer to those books for the correct answers. I enjoy posting here and have made a lot of friends and gained a lot of knowledge. Maybe my choice of words could have been better.. I am sorry if I offended anyone. Only trying to help.......
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (silvervetteman)
Another huge thing would be a better search engine. I don't know a thing about data management, but I frequent another forum http://www.avsforum.com often, and their search function is MUCH better. I can have almost all of my questions answered immediatly simply by doing a search. On this forum I am rarely able to find anything I need. I the forum moves so fast that if the best person to answer a particular question is away for a few days he'll never see the question.
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (silvervetteman)
Sometimes I’ll post just because of the wealth of user information here. I have seen a lot of time saving shortcuts.
Like today I need to take out my consol to get to the power window relay. I could go out there a mess with it and figure it out, but I figured maybe someone would have some shorts cuts. Or say “You don’t have to do that, just…..” :smash:
But I guess not, no replies to “Console cover removal question”. So I guess I’ll go mess with it.

Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (silvervetteman)
I've been working on my Vette for a couple years now and only recently started posting. My first couple years here was mostly doing searches for past posts.
Because of the knowledge I gained here and with the experience of doing it myself I have started actively posting... time to give back some of the knowledge I gained from all the folks here.
Maybe we should teach folks how to do a search.
Whatever...
The folks here are the greatest and the all the knowledge and experiences are priceless. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:
I can surely agree with you to a point. Many of these repair manuals were written years ago......Folks here have learned short cuts etc, to make a job go easier by using a better sealer or whatever that wasn't available when the book was written..... I have my repro owners manual, my Chilton's Repair Guide, and others, and after reading them I still might want to use this very valuable resource (The Forum) just to see if anybody has developed a "short cut", or perhaps a better gasket, or whatever... This Place ROCKS, and may it ALWAYS be that way.......
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (silvervetteman)
I am no expert but a new vette owner 1971 convt. Can't even get pictures of my car to stay on the forum.
But the first item I order for my car was a shop manual. That was over a month ago and Chicago corvette told me today that it has not come in and they think they are reprinting them.
I have a repair manual but id does not show the breakdown that can help me ?
I probally have asked some stubid questions but I appreceiate the help that was given to me to fix some minor problems that I had with lights horn
back up lights and where to get info.
I will always accept help and try to give it if I know what I am telling the person.
Thanks to all that helped out.
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (silvervetteman)
Looking at my manual (the original, still in the glove box), the thing was so poorly laid out, it is a pain in the bottom to find what your looking for in a hurry. Besides, the guys on the forum will give much more info then a manual could even hope to tell you. I've never read in a manual yet that said "wrench the #$%# of it, and if that dosn't work, bang it with a hammer, if that dosn't work, and if you havn't lost a thumb remove the bolts and do it on a bench vise, but not one of those chepo things, you need a good one, and oh ya...you're going to bang the crap out of your fingers".
Re: What's this? what does this **** do? (riorata)
So where can I get the Assembly Manual (AIM) can't seem to search it out?
You can find them at most Corvette parts places like Eckler's or Zip. Somtimes you can get them at car show/swap meets. Ebay is good too if you're into that.
