Default what is this plug wire for? original temp sending unit??

we bought this 72 vette and there is a plug hanging down that is near the temp sending unit area. There is already some wires pluged into the temp sending unit, but it looks like the previous owner may have rigged a new wire to the sending unit. The plug on the sending unit has two slanted plugs and does not match the plug hanging, that has two straight plugs, so i was wondering if there was an original sending unit that had two flat plugs. Or if anyone knows where this hanging plug would connect to.

The car did not originally have AC that I am aware of. The heating controls do not have ac on them and the center console has the slots in it for the vent controls and the wiper bezel does not contain the ac vents under the wiper control.

Did they install an AC hook-up plug in the wiring harness just in case you wanted to add ac to it later?

Also, I noticed that the plug on the temp. sending unit has a wire that connects (loops) from one connection to the other and then has a wire coming out of the same connection going out to the gauge in the dash. Is this normal? I'm pretty sure the temp. gauge is not working. I have already taken out all the gauges (because I am re-doing the interior), so I can not really check that right now. I just feel like the wiring has been "rigged" up on this vehicle and I would like to correct it. There are a lot of frayed wires and a few wires that have been just cut and left hanging that have a constant 12V. I also found a cylinder with a black wire going in and coming out of it that has been cut. It is located on the driver side, behind the guages. Any ideas what that could be and why it would be cut?

I'm not sure....I was hoping someone could look on their vette and see if they have one of those plugs and tell me what it is plugged into or send me a photo of it. That would be very helpful.

Here is a pic of my TCS connector on my 73. Took me a while to figure it out. The TCS has long been removed from my car. There a lot of pics and posts on here about it. just search for "TCS"

Awwww....I bet that is what it was for. I researched it and it looks like a lot of people removed the TCS because it gave the car more horsepower. That would explain why there are some cut wires in the system too. I think there was probably a throttle position solenoid as well on there at one time. Thanks for the info, I think this solves my dangling plug mystery...YAY!!

What model year? Most temp sending units are on the left front of the block. Your pic is on the passenger's side of things.

mine is a 72. The temp sending unit shown in my pic (i'm guessing that's what that is) is on the passenger side on the block near the starter.

That temp sender is for the TCS. Your engine temp sender will be on the driver side, between and below the front two spark plugs.

My TCS was remove long ago too.

Technically, that's an alternate location. Heads can be swapped from side to side. Is there a sending unit on the driver's side between #1 and #3 plugs?

I believe it was working before we took it out. I remember the temperature was getting hotter when we would crank it and let it idle. We have stripped all the inside out now and are in the process of re-doing that. It's big mess now. I am at work now and I sent instructions to my nephew and my dad to check to see if there is a sending unit on the drivers side near plugs 1 & 3 and they said they do not see anything there.
