Default Water Pump Determination - Custom

In building a resto-mod, what should determine the use of a short - long - or corvette specific water pump?

Power steering, alternator, crank, water pump only (no A/C) (electric fan)

I believe the answer would be determined by the brackets used? If stock then the corvette pump would have to be used? Would a standard short work with aftermarket pulleys but stock brackets?

Can someone clear this up?

Not much to answer too. The short pump whether a BB or SB.....The shaft size may very however the pumps as new has the hardware included...we sold hundreds when the parts store was still open.....

Either I misunderstood you, or you misunderstood me.

Basically what I'm asking is if one is to build a SBC from scratch for a C3, what water pump should be used?

My assumption is that if the stock brackets are used, then the C3 specific pump. If aftermarket brackets are used, does it matter to use a short or long water pump?

..and a secondary question mixed in all of that was - Can a standard, non C3 specific, short water pump be used with the stock brackets?

I used the stock brackets from a C3 on a Dart SHP block and used the Edelbrock Victor 8812 water pump. Everything fits and works perfectly.

One of the reasons for the Corvette specific pump is to accommodate the crank pulley. It runs very close to the frame.

Also the power steering pump gets real close to the frame. I used DrRebuild because his drawings and original brackets were a perfect fit but to answer you question, I would go short water pump and keep everything as close to the engine as possible.
