I just started put the transmission into my 78. Got it with no trans or motor a tall, so I don't have beginning reference. I did get a box of parts though
Anyway, I have the shift cable bracket, but I cant see how it mounts onto the transmission (TH350). I actually had to file a bit off of the side to get it to mount at all, that may be due to the alum pan I'm using. But with it mounted, there doesn't seem to be any way that the cable will work in that direction.
Can someone get some pics of the bracket with the cable mounted and attached to the trans?
OK, thanks. It looks like you have two brackets? One for the shift cable and the other for kick down? My bracket doesn't go around the corner like that, Im wandering if I have the front cable in your pic and Im missing the other one. I also think I need to clock the arm coming out of the trans, mine is pointing up.
The front bracket (the one going around the corner as you see it) is for the steering column interlock, a cable goes up and that's what turns the column house bit (like on a normal car when you pulled the shift lever on the column and then turned it down into gear)
Your 78 didn't have one I don't believe (I think they ended that in 76 and went to some other method)
Your kick down cable is on the other side of the trans (the TH400 had an electric kick-down so no cable)
I believe the arm should point down on either the TH400 as shown or the TH350. Easy to tell since it would reverse the shifter operation
Thanks Mooser. engine and trans were out of the car when I got it. I rebuilt the trans, but I guess I put that arm back the wrong way. Got it all figured out now though. I suppose that would have been an eye opener!!! I had to grind a good bit to get it to fit with the alum pan, but it works. I wasn't sure about the direction of the shofter, so I jacked up the rear and made sure it went to park correctly.
