Default Help me Please!

OK I’m still trying to fix my power windows. :( (78 Pace Car) After determining it is probably a bad relay, I need to get to the relay that is under the console cover. My POS all-in-one manual says “Remove the trim plate screws”.:mad Well, I took out the 4 screws at the shifter, and that did me no good. So I assume there are screws under the carpeting on the sides. But I can’t see how to get the carpeted side covers off without destroying them. Any words of wisdom on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Also can anyone tell me if I EVER get to the relay is there a way to test it or do I just need to replace it?

Thanks,
Dave

Okay my best friend has the same car, there are three screws holding it on and the remainder is age and glue, it will come off. Now the relays can be fixed but your better spending the $$$ for new ones. At the bottom of the switch is two tabs bent in. This is chromed brittle pot metal so if you break them as I did I just used super glue  Pop the tabs spearate the switch and the metal contacts will be corroded (brass) clean them up and bend them up ever so carefully, then assemble the switch. A voltmeter will verify if you have full contact in the up or down position, other than that spend $50.00 and order new ones.

Mine has 3 screws through the side carpet. One 2" from the front of the carpet, one 23" from the front, and one about 2.5" from the rear. You should be able to feel them.

When you get in there take a look at the plugs on the swithches. I think they are the same as the ones on the door lock swithches. They have small wires that may have been pulled out.

I guess you could just check for power in/power out from the relay. Hows that for a tech tip?? I really don't know anything about it, but that is what I would try.

I assume you are talking about the console cover and not the carpeted panels on the side?
If so, how do I get these side panels off without tearing them up?

I had to fix my rear defroster switch some time back. All I did was remove the screw from front of carpeted panels and that gave me the room I needed to get in there.. :yesnod:

Slick, the side panels were tore up on mine when I got it. The carpet was glued to some hardboard (masonite). Is that the way it was originally installed? I bought some hardboard and installed my new carpet the same way.

Dave, if above is the case be real careful not to break the hardboard.

Thanks you guys I got in there. But now I have to find the relay. I thought I would just follow the wires from the switches, but oh no.
I'll post the question in another post.
Thanks again,
Dave
