Default Control valve

I am going to rebuild the power steering control valve. Do I need to have the car on jack stands, or are ramps ok? (Talk of whipping steering wheel has me a little concerned.)

Jackstands and make sure that when you steer the wheel all the way to full lock (both right and left) that you don't hit the stands at full travel.

It might come off the ramps, I would definately use jack stands. You need to have no pressure on the wheels when you adjust the valve anyways. When you turn on the car after the rebuild make sure your arm is away from the steering wheel, it turns fast enough that it would probably leave a large bruise.

Jim & Ben, thanks for the info!

Another quick question. My Haynes manual says I need a "balljoint seperator, a two jaw puller might work". True? Can I manage without one?

Definately make sure that the the ram cylinder shaft is disconnected from the bracket mounted on the frame, until you have adjusted the P/S valve.
That way the wheels will not turn at all. When you have the valve adjusted correctly then you can reconnected to the frame bracket.
