It is the high idle feature of the choke that makes it easier to keep the car running when cold when you shift into gear with an automatic transmission. Most carburettor engines I have observed that will start and run easily with no choke in a cool or cold climate have a richer idle mixture than normal.

so far I haven't had to give the car gas or hold pedal for start up. its only been today I did retard the timing today as I felt it a little accelerated but so far so good im a give it a good run for a week and see how it goes.
