old charging system gurus?
New alternator 37A, tested good at discount auto. New voltage regulator.
Symtoms: with the battery fully charged (battery charger) I read 12.32 volts. With the ignition switch on but car not running I get 12.32 volts at the alternator power lead. With car car running I get 12.34 volts. If I turn the lights on I get 11.98 volts. The reading don’t change with RPM. Voltage regulator terminl readings - The “F” & “R” wires from the regulator to the alternator show continuity. The #3 terminl shows battery voltage (12.34) the #4 terminal which comes from the ignition switch only shows 12.27)
Can someone test the #3 & #4 terminals for me (ignition swith on, car off)? I think I either need a new ignition switch or the wire feeding the #4 terminal has too much resistance. I’m about out of ideas on this one.
or an old schematic of the regulator inerds. New I should kept that old Glenn manual.
It sounds like the regulator is not set properly, there is an adjustment for the points. When they tested your alternator did they tell you what voltage it was putting out? between "F" and the "2" terminal should be the reading I think. Maybe this will help some.

I think with your schematic and my complete car schematic I'll be able to solve this. I'll test and set the gap on the contacts in the morning. Strange to have the same symptoms with two Delco regulators, thats why I'm thinking a wiring problem. I'm afraid to try the old short the "F" terminal thing with a new elctroninc ignition. There is a big warning label on the ignition box about high voltage.
