NEED HELP Big Block Chevy Solid Roller Cam / Lifter Question
Ok So my dad has a 13 to 1 460 inch big block with a Crower cam.
I am not sure of thje exact specs right off hand but is in the .680 lift range.
We recently broke a lifter arm so have it apart and we are setting it up on Number 1.
ALL lifters are out, timing chain, cam button, timing chain cover are all installed.
I set the distributor in for the heck of it with ALL lifters out, when I clocked it, simply rotating it, the cam shifts, it 'walks" forward nearly 1/8 inch.
Is this normal or is there a major problem? I was about to drop in the lifters and start adjusting the valves but now wonder if there is a cam walk problem.

You might have a couple of things going on. First of all your cam chain is loose or the gear on the crank is not aligned. Actually a tight chain will line up the cam gear. Then you set the button to keep from having forward cam walk in the future as the cam chain stretches.
Roller lifters do not impart thrust on the cam like flat lifters
That is too much end play, needs to be around .010, and a stock timing cover Will flex and push out where the button pushes aginst it. I use the heavy duty covers with the supports in them or a cast alum. cover to keep the end play set, some of the aftermarket water pumps have a stop bolt on them that you set aginst the timing cover to keep it from flexing also. Cam walk will destroy a roller cam. Doing the same thing now on 396 I am building.
