I had to have had one of the hottest (temp wise) Corvettes on earth. I've had it for 5 years. It is a 73 4-speed small block L48. I put the heater core shut off valve on a year ago, but still had heat. In doing more research on this forum and other sources, I found 3 things I could do on my own since I'm not a mechanic, but I'm somewhat mechanically inclined. After doing my research and examining my car for the umteenth time, I found out that I'd didn't have 1) a lower shifter boot 2) a trans tunnel foam gasket 3) a hood weather strip gasket. I just finished replacing all three and it made a huge difference. My shifter **** and parking brake area used to be too hot to touch. Today, the shifter **** was actually cool. I don't have any of the reflectix under my carpet, so I still can do that. I just wanted to share and say thanks to anyone who has posted those helpful hints because they sure did help.
thanks for the info. The hood weather strip is the lining that on the inside of fender did you use epoxy or glue for that?
I bought that yellow glue, but it was a little too hard to put on the hood by myself because it was so runny. I wound up using black 3m weather strip cement.
i placed a bright spot light under the engine bay on my 72,
then shut the shed/garage door so it was dark,
then from inside the car, i looked under the dash area for any light showing thru,
looked like a disco under there.... rotten/missing grommets etc.
the main holes i had were where the rubber plugs that hold the top of the carpet up under the pedals were missing.
3 holes about 3/8"dia letting in hot engine bay heat.
plugged them with some grommets, big difference with no hot air in the foot well.
Install quality heat/soundproofing under the carpet.....you won't regret it!
Using an infrared gun, my floorboards went from 145* with the original carpet DOWN to 100* 0n a 98* day after installing floorboard reflective insulation and new carpet/w/backing!
