Default 1972 base engine stalls after first start.

Hello all,

Just purchased my first Corvette after years of searching and can't be more excited! Just joined the forum. Read many treads since the purchase but now have an actual question about my car. Here goes...the car starts beautifully and will idle just fine. Every time I go to back it out of the garage, it will just about stall requiring me to give it a lot of gas. After I get the car going, by the end of my short road, the stalling tendency is gone. Won't happen again until it has sat for a long time, many hours. Letting it sit and idle does not seem to help. Only getting the car going, (warmed up?) helps. This is not a terrible problem, just annoying. Any ideas? Thanks from a guy with not too much car experience!!

It could be a lot of things.. but choke sticking comes to my mind..

Maybe my bump will draw in a few more replies.

I had the same problem with my 72 and changed over to a synthetic oil which helped me. My car sits in the garage for long periods.

It's almost certainly a choke that's misadjusted.

I'm not really sure how Synthetic Oil would help anything in regards to stalling or cutting out. Please elaborate...

Welcome to vintage cars with carburetors. You can possibly make this better but sounds pretty typical. I have a 69 and upgraded it with an Edelbrock ProFlow EFI and Mallory electronic ignition, and the car has never ran better!
There are a couple of guys on the forum that work on Quadrajet carbs that will be able to help you out if you want to stay with the old Quadrajet Carb.

My 72/auto with the original carb rebuilt by forum member Lars starts and runs flawlessly when cold, no stumbles or stalls. They can be made to run right.

Thanks for all of these suggestions. I'll check the choke first. Project for this weekend.
