Default Help with ID engine block and components 76 vette

Hi guys,
New to the forum and was checking out a vette for purchase. the owner did not have all the details on what has been done to the engine, but said it was not the stock block. The hood decal says L-48, but some of the paperwork he showed me from the mod shops had L-82 listed. I tried to get some photos of the numbers as best i could.

Anyone have any idea what it is? Anyone know about any of the other mods just by the photos?

Thanks guys, love the forum!

Check the pad on the block at the front of the right side head. You should find two numbers stamped there. One stamp will be the engine identificatin stamp; the second should be the VIN derivative of the vehicle the engine was originally installed in.

The engine ID suffix will be alpha characters. You can Google the characters or post them here.

The casting date of June 28 1978 indicates that this cannot be the original engine. The stamp pad appears to be blank probably from the engine block having being decked during an overhaul. There's no way of knowing what's inside the engine without disass'y.

The fifth character in the car's VIN will tell you whether it was originally an L48 or L82. 'L' means L48, 'X' means L82.

Ok thank you. It appears it was an L48 based on vin but a mystery what it is now! Owner says it has been dyno'ed at 425 hp so clearly something has been done to it!
