Default Manual Rack and Pinion Steering?

Anyone install a Flaming River or Steroids Manual Rack and Pinion Steering Kit in there C3? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

Not that I've kept up with developments since, but there have been complaints not too many years back about a number of r&p kits having weak/flexible mounts, including some failures. So, I'd make sure and do some follow up homework along those lines too.

Whatever the type of manual steeering system in question, unless you're setting up strictly for track days, low-speed steering effort should be given consideration. C3 stock steering boxes are apparently 16.1:1, with an effective manual ratio of 20.2:1 and power (or "quick") ratio of 17.6:1. If you have manual steering now, you can divide 20.2 by whatever ratio had by the optional system to compare relative effort. For instance, simply moving the outer tie rods to the quick holes in your steering arms would have the following result:
20.2/17.6=1.148 or roughly 15% additional low-speed effort.
My having driven C3s with manual steering at both settings, IMHO this seems about right.

As for manual vs power, IMCO the nearer to the AX/RR corner of the performance envelope you wish to be, the more likely you are to find a well sorted manual steering set up to your advantage, as it won't mask true feedback. And, the nearer that corner, any increase in steering effort at parking lot speeds due to electing a quicker than stock ratio becomes less important.

Hope that helps.

BBC with manual R&P. You must young and strong Joe. I'm not that any more. I installed P/S, when the Steeroids R/P went in. T

Thanks for the reply's. They all make sense. Can you check out this company TRZ Motorsports? They offer a very decent Manual Rack and pinion set op for our C3's. From what I'm told this kit does require some welding, but actually works very well even when making tight cornering. I mainly drive down the quarter mile, but still enjoy an occasional street cruise when the weather is cooler. I'm just tired of the stock style power steering set up, and have heard about some of the flexing issues with the bolt in power r&p units.

Thanks,

Joe
