I am currently running 2.5 inch straight pipes through dynomax mufflers. If I go to the 2.25 '69 sidepipes, am I going to experience material performance losses? Or is the width of the pipe going to be offset by being able to run with no mufflers?
You will probably loose about 50 rwhp with the sidepipes, but you will LOOK so much faster and SOUND so much faster probably you wont even notice the loss of power!!  MJ
My first Vette-350 had aftermarket side pipes and later discovered no muffling, very loud. But very high torque braking.
My present-427 has factory pipes and was Very Loud. I cut the fronts off and stuffed insulation in the forward baffles. I saw no difference in performance. I didn't rattle windows though when I left home.
You can remove the mufflers on the aftermarkets if you wanted to- but not for the street.
The big benefit is the headers. Either, I think is about the same after this.
Stock sidepipes don't run with headers. They do have a shorter run but more bends. The entire side pipe is the muffler.
The repro sidepipes is a chambered exhaust system that runs the entire length of the side of the vette. The chambered exhaust is comprised of two pipes side-by-side with thin slits around them to allow gases to move between them, and with a cover that wraps around both of them. It does a real great job at muffling the sound compared to straight pipes. But, they are much louder than baffle type mufflers, and flow much better too.
Silly Boy! No mufflers indeed. What are you smoking? You will definitely need mufflers, if not for your own hearings sake...for everybody elses.
I'm running open Hooker Sidepipes and when cruising - the noise is at an acceptable level.. Only when stepping on the gas - it gets quite loud... Especially with an overdrive transmission - you can almost have a normal conversation in the car when cruising... Well - I personally don't mind the noise... I listen to Heavy Metal too at similar volume level as my car....
The loss occurs if you use the std. ramhorns. They can be modified to hook up with your existing headers by your muffler shop then there is only a small decrease that is negligable. If you were to use the ramhorns expect a 15 hp loss over what you have now, I looked into this at length last winter. Talked to the ppl at Sanderson and Stalh as well as a few other specialty exhaust co's in the US.
