Default AC problem in 82 Collector

I looked at an 82 collector for sale yesterday. The car looked and drove very nice. The AC blew cold air but the air did not come out of the AC vents but from under the dash(heater vents).
Any theories on the problem and how hard to fix?
Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,

I posed this question also. (See post "A/C doesn't blow out of top vents. Any suggestions?"). If I'm following DAVEL82 explanation correctly the AC/HEATER control unit is the culprit. According to Corvette America the entire unit is only $119.00 which I'd be ok with buying for the car.

I put the tops in the car yesterday afternoon and my son and I drove around for about 2 hours (went looking for him a new dirtbike) and the car cooled down fine and was very comfortable. I would imagine the air volume is being limited somewhat coming only out of the lower vents (less outlets) but once I was out on the road and the car had time to cool down it was pleasant. So I'm sure it's not an A/C problem itself, which in my mind, is where the big repair bill would come up.

Like I said, I rarely put the tops in the car or I'm sure I would've noticed that before. I need that 'air-in-my-hair' fix.

Regards,
