Ok I am in the middle of rear tear down to rebuild. I can't get the bearings off the carrier I tried a bearing puller, but the outer cage just pulled off not the whole bearing on the posi hub. Any one know how to do it? I making the gear set 3:73 for a 71 vette from US gear. :cry
I used the puller shown in the upper right hand side of this picture. Initially, It only ripped the cage off as well. I took another bite and clamped down harder on the jaws and it finally came off. It was TOUGH to get off. If all else fails, use a cutoff wheel on a dremel tool to split the race.
Luckily, I replaced the bearings with the same thickness of shims as the factory had used and it worked. I dreaded the thought of having to remove the new bearings to adjust the shim pack for fear of destroying the new bearing.
Good luck. I have completed setup of the 3.73:1 gears in my DANA 44http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=193247
I used a 2 jaw puller from Sears to pop them off. I made a spacer a little smaller then the OD of the carrier hub. the jaws just fit into the notches in the casting of the carrier. I used an impact gun to drive them. The outer race will distort but it poped them off. I did this on 3 differentials so far. Note: I only worked on the Eaton differentials used up to 79. The bearign splitter that Mike shows is a great tool to have too.
Be careful if you're going to cut the race that you don't score the hub. also check the housing for cracks. I ground and polished hte carrier before rebuilding it to help prevent stress cracks. I used 3.73 US gears from Tom's Differentials. I was told to set them from the center to toe on the pattern instead of the center pattern of the GM gears. Good Luck
