I need to change hood for more clearance, I see that the L88 hoods are offered with air box and without. Is the air box made to use the small air cleaner that was used from the factory on the 427. What are the pros and cons of ordering with or without an airbox?

If you order a hood with the air box, I would utilize the L-88 air cleaner assembly and pic up a few HP at higher speeds. Essentially what this setup accomplishes is it seals off the hot engine compartment air from the carb. The air chamber will draw in the cooler air at the low pressure area created at the base of the windshield. Cooler air=more HP(more noticable at higher speeds). If you decide not to use the air box with an air box hood, you will be limited to the size of air cleaner you can use. The air cleaner will need to fit into the air chamber opening to close your hood.
If you decide on the L-88 hood without the air box, you are simply gaining more hood clearance. There will be no advantage of the cooler air being drawn in from the windshield.
Here's a pic of the air cleaner assembly. I think they're still available at Paragon, Zips etc. There are more pics at my site below at the L-88 hood page.

I think there is a HP advantage. you just cant notice it much :D
