Default Speedometer on my '70

On my '70, the speedometer is approximately 10 mph off, so when I'm cruising at 55 mph I'm actually doing 65! Good for the odometer reading, but not good for accurate mph! I've known this ever since I bought the car because the previous owner had it checked and I have the paperwork! Anyway, I was up under the car to look at the number of teeth of the gear to correct the problem, but when I looked, the speedometer cable from the dash goes into what appears to be, a gear reduction assembly. One side of this assembly has the speedometer cable screwed to it, the other side screws into the transmission housing. I thought that the speedometer cable screwed directly into the transmisson housing. I've taken it apart and inside it has 3 gears, two being drive gears and a pinion gear. (And at the time I forgot to count the teeth on each gear, duh!) The dimensions are approximately 3"Lx1.5"Wx1"D. I was curious to find out if anyone has this? Thanks in advance!

Default Re: Speedometer on my '70 (RMVette)

I have the same problem with my 70 LT-1 and about the same variation. I know I have 3.70 gears. That puts 4th gear at 45 (2000 RPMs), 53 (2500), 65 (3000) based on 215/70/R15 tires. Hope this helps for reference.
