Default Removing fan

On my 74 Vette, I want to strip and repaint the fan. I would like to know if I have to re move the pulley ?And can you remove without removing the shroud.

You have to pull the belt and the pulley. You should be able to get it out, without removing the shroud. Try removing the bolts first, with the belt on, so that the fan doesn't turn, along with the wrench. If it turns, then use a square shanked screwdriver across the heads of the other bolts to hold the fan in place, while you loosen the bolt in particular.

I have removed several of them without removing the pulley or shroud.

The pulleys and belts do not need to come off.

Remove the 4 nuts holding the fan cluch onto the pulley, and then remove the fan and fan clutch as a unit. Then you can remove the fan from the fan clutch.

After removing the fan clutch store it in the same orientation as it is on the car - ie. vertical. If you lay it flat, the silicone fluid inside can leak out, and it won't work anymore.

Mashman,

I do believe you can lay the clutch thermostat down, flange up. This is the instruction on my clutch, which I followed with no issues.

I agree with all the rest.

Your fan should have a very thin layer of paint.

You can pull just the fan and leave the pulleys and belts in place, just did this last month, did not even loosen the tension on the belts.
Just the four bolts for the fan.
Shroud no, with the extension? Remove just the extension and the fan will be easy to remove
