If you have the "locking" type motor mounts and they are in good shape, the engine won't move much.
I'd guess that 1/2" would be safe. Roll up SMALL diameter's of plumber's putty and stick them to the top of the air cleaner. Close the hood, reopen it carefully, and check your clearances.

Put the putty in a baggie. You can also use loosely balled up aluminum foil instead of putty. I used some modeling clay.

I have this issue on the right front edge. The engine is offset and the box just sits under the transition from the L88 bulge to the flat side of the hood.
I do not have much clearance now. Somewere around 3-4mm (1/8").
If I rework the box, I might be able to get 1/2" but that is the absolute max I can get.
