Default Water Pump Pulley Rubs on Pump Casting

1969 L46, no ac, p/s....Having some trouble with the water pump pulley rubbing on the pump itself. Looks like it interferes by nearly 1/8". Did they come originally with a spacer or pulley reinforcement between the w/p hub and the pulley?

The aim isn't a lot of help in this case as it shows base motor pulley 3890419 which I believe is a 7" pulley but L46 I think is supposed to have 5 7/8" deep groove pulley which is what I have on it now. The stock length belts seem the right length for L46 with p/s

The problem with the AIM is that the L46 option action has been usurped by the LT-1 option so no info available there AFAIK.

BTW the water pump is 5 5/8" from the block to the hub face so that seems right. Could it be there are different W/P castings and I need one with more relief where the rubbing occurs? Or should the pulley be shimmed out 1/8"? Thanks for any help, Rick

edit: Just wanted to add that the w/p has a 5/8" shaft and 1.750" bolt hole circle which I believe is right for this car. The pulley on it is double groove 5 7/8" p/n 3995641.

Thanks for replying MelWff. The pump itself might be the problem. No GM number. Must be a repro maybe for a Corvette with a larger W/P pulley is all I can think of since it's 5 5/8" .

I had a similar problem with my 77, the stock pulley fit on properly with my Edelbrock Victor Jr water pump. However, when I went to upgrade to a billet aluminum pulley it rubbed on the housing of the water pump. So rather than mess with the pulley, I simply took a file to the outside of the housing. The aluminum pulley now works fine and you can't see where I filed the housing unless you know where to look behind the pulley on the front of the water pump. Sometimes adjustments need to be made to make things work. JMHO

I did shim it out yesterday Gary and it's turning freely. My plan is to change the pump later but had to get past it because tomorrow is body drop day. Thanks to all who replied, Rick
