Default Stereo setups in 77 or earlier.

I posted this in audio but got no response. It seems most people in the audio section are C5ers or C4ers.

Go to my website in my sig and look at the Stereo Install. I put two amps, a 12 disk CD changer, graphic equalizer and subwoofer in my 74 and there's still room for the t-tops. Hope you get some ideas.

That is a nice installation. It does start to give me some ideas. I was wondering if you could tell me exactly how did you get your power from the battery to the "sound board"? I haven't found a way to get the line out of the battery compartment and into the passenger compartment.

Thanks,

Russ

I just got my final two components this week, and I will hopefully take some pics along the way of the install. It should be interesting, like trying to cram 10 lbs of "stuff" into a 5 lb bag. My new amp is 23 inches long, and 10 inches wide, so trying to fit that in the back along with my 10 inch sub and cd changer will be interesting. I plan on having the t-tops still fit as well. Wish me luck!

I ran a heavy line from the battery post and then along the bulkhead (the part that your seatback rests against) to the quarter panels just behind the door. You can't see it because the bulkhead rises up about 2 inches and the line is hidden behind it.

Chris,

Got the pics. Thanks a ton.

AC,

Good luck trying to get everything to fit. I have no idea where ALL of these speakers will fit. I guess I'm going to have to sacrifice some speakers to the audio gods.

Vettfixr,
How did you get the line out of the battery compartment without the lid staying partially open? I have 12 gauge power wire and right now it is run very similar to yours but the problem is that I can't close the battery compartment lid because the power wire is coming out.

Thanks for the ideas guys,

Russ

Some advice on a subwoofer, to save space get an Infinity Basslink. It does not require an amp, it has a Class D amp built in, constructed with a 10" woofer and a 10" passive woofer. It sounds great, way better than the bass tubes (more expensive though). I have an Infinity 10" Kappa Perfect sub in my truck, that thing rocks, but it's very large.

I'll see if I can dig some pictures up of my stereo installation in my '77 Vette

Taz,

I would love to get the infinity basslink but I already have 2 12" subs and 2 8" subs plus 2 amps and 2 6X9's. I don't think I could justify buying any more speakers  . I will, however, be putting some sort of DVD system in so that I can have some navigation capabilities. I get lost all the time in Houston :)

I'd love some pics of your setup as well, if you can find them.

Have fun fitting those big speakers in a '77. I toyed with the idea and it was going to be tight.

I'll find some pics of mine, or just take more :) It's a completely independant system, everything is mounted in the back of the car and can be taken out with a screwdriver and batery terminal wrench.

That's exactly what I want to do. Something completely independant. Right now there is a box that virtually fills the rear of the car. All of the speakers including the 6x9's are mounted in it. I don't think that there is enough air space for all the speakers but then I'm no installation expert either. I do know that the 12's sound very messy when I turn the system up. I think they are rated at 350W continuous, and I'm only powering them with 250W continuous.

Do you have any pictures of the setup?

Mine bridges over the top of the rear compartment between the two wheel wells, leaving space under them for the T-tops (wish my car had the optional T-top racks for the luggage rack).

It's just one big rectangular box that fits between the wheel wells all the way up to the edge of the storage bins. The 2 MTX 8's are mounted on the back facing rearward, the 2 12's are mounted on the top facing upwards, the 2 6X9's are mounted on the front, in the center, facing forwards, and the 75x2 amp is mounted on the front. The 250x2 amp is just sitting on top of the battery storage bin right now.

I was thinking about moving the 6x9's to the kick panel and making some sort of an angled false wall to mount the speakers to. I can e-mail you a pic of what I want to do.

Look somewhat similar to what I have, but that takes up a lot more room.

Honestly that's too much speaker for the interior size of a Corvette. I have a 10" sub along with two 6x9's in my Dodge single cable diesel truck and it's more than enough.

Yeah it is a lot of speaker, but with the tops off and the exhaust rumbling it's hard to hear. I would like to add some more upper range speakers to clean up the voices. The subs actually add just about the right amount of bass. In town they can really thump, but on the highway as I mentioned they are just about perfect.

How about a nice set of 6x9's or a component system.

I have a pair of Polk dx9 6x9's. A nice set of MB Quart components would be nice.

Are the subs ported or sealed?

When I installed my system, I found a nice out-of-the-way place to install my amp. I never had the factory jack, so I just installed my amp in that storage compartment. I was able to run all my power wires straight to the battery under the middle storage compartment. My RCAs were fed along the center console and again under the storage compartment to the amp. Then for my sub, I just discretely ran a speaker wire along the wheel well back to where the JL 10" sub was mounted. I have a towel that matches my interior covering up the front of the sub, so even from the front of the car its hard to tell anything is in there. The only problem I found was that on long trips, the amp would overheat and shut off for a while - to fix this I just installed a couple 12v cooling fans (like what you could use for a computer case) blowing across its fins and I've had no trouble since.

For my head unit, I cut the dash to fit a new DIN style CD player. Looks really sharp and sounds good IMO. For fronts, I installed some Boston Accoustic coaxial speakers in the stock positions. Those are powered by the amp also. For the rear, the previous owner had installed some small crappy 3.5" speakers which I power off of the head unit at a very low volume (faded mostly forward). All together, this system sounds very nice and is loud enough to hear over the headers and dual exhaust.

Jason, that sounds like a pretty trick setup. I thought about doing something like that but don't know that my Poweracoustik amp and Jensen amp would fit. They are both rather large.

Taz77

The subs are ported, sortof :bb

I guess the box was too big to fit directly in the back, it was hitting on the little piece of the frame that angles down in the center of the back glass. So a 1.5" strip was cut out of the top of the box, right down the middle.

I currently have a set of Blaupunkt 6x9's in the box but they are firing from behind me so they sound a little strange. Also, there is no cross over so they are receiving the full signal. The subs are powered by the amps which have built in cross overs.

Hrm..

If it were me. I would put a nice component system in the back, MB Quart, and then one 10" sealed sub, Infinity Kappa Perfect (if you want to sacrifice the room), run it from a 4 channel amp with the rear channel bridged to run the sub. That would be really nice, similar to what I have in my truck. putting the amp in the storage area is a good idea, but I sure do keep a lot of stuff down in there.

Again it would be great to have the T-top storage racks for the '77

The amp I'm running is a Rockford Fosgate 4 channel. It fits great on the bottom of the storage container. You may be able to mount a longer amp vertically in the same area w/ the drop in bin removed. I'd at least do a test fit to see if it'd work.
