On my 79 L82 the clock is kaput. Since the radio has a clock I'm wondering about replacing it with another useful gauge. Anyone done this, and what gauge did you insert?
Oil temp as per 1981-82 with clock included in radio.
I did the same 30 years ago. Forget the clock. Put the oil temp sending unit above the oil filter where the OEM oil pressure sending unit is now. Relocated the oil pressure sender to the top of engine behind the distributor.
The wiring for this conversion on my '81 was already in place...so it is fairly easy to make the change...not sure if it is the same for a '79...Good Luck!
The link talks about the jumping the oil temp gauge to one of the other gauges for power which I do remember having to do-you will definitely have to do the same on the 79 like my 78. The link also talks of the oil temp gauge being an option in 80-82. I did not know that info but apparently it was an option in 1981 based on 4spdL81's comments. I don't think it was an option on the 1980 corvette-I have never seen that gauge on an 80 and have never NOT seen an 82 without an oil temp gauge-believe all 82's had an oil temp gauge. Maybe someone with an 1980 can comment if their car came with an oil temp gauge and if anyone with an 82 does NOT have that gauge. Just curious….
When you remove the clock you'll have to remove the power lead on the printed circuit. This is not a big deal. Here is some info that may help you do this conversion too.
