79 tail light upgrade?
I have a 79 with auto so its 2 tail lights and 2 back-ups. I was thinking it would be nice if someone made a kit that turned the backups into combo tail/backups instead of just reflectors. I assume it would be LED?
Anyone know something for this?
Sorry for the glare in the pic...I did mine based on this:

Upgrading to 4 solid reds and relocating reverse next, found two solid red lenses on ebay for 15 bucks (lucked out, theyre kinda expensive)

The difficulty with the stock back-up lights is that they orient the bulb vertically, unlike the brake lights that orient the bulb horizontally.
I used a pair of old brake lights and cut the lenses off through the red line of the lens material, using a dremel with cut off wheel. A little sanding on a flat plate gave me two brake light cones ready to receive back-up light lenses.
Next I cut away the entire back of my back-up lights and used the flat plate to sand away the remaining reflector flange, down to the lens material.
I found that red 90 mm COB angel eyes (found on ebay) were slightly larger than the distance between the columns that hold the two attachment screws. I made small notches at the base of these columns, which allowed the angel eyes to seat very snugly, and I used a dab of DEVCON PLASTIC WELDER (great stuff!! It's 2 part and mixes and is used like epoxy.) to secure the angel eyes in place.
Next, I made a cylindrical shield of very light gauge aluminum and pop rivets that just fit the inner diameter of the white back-up lens and the plastic welder to secure it. This separated the functions of the back-up light and the red angel eye led, which functions as an inner pair of tail lights.
Finally I used the plastic welder adhesive to glue the lens to the cone and I was done. NOTE: The wiring powering the angel eyes was run through the cavity that was the brake light locating pin and sealed the hole with more plastic welder. I had cut the pin down enough to open up a passage through the reflector.
After wiring them I tried them. The faceted reflector surface of the back-up light lens distributes the light from the angel eyes and gives it a VERY bright glow that is slightly more orange than my outer tail lights. It is at least as bright as my outer tail lights Combined with the 6 inch wide x 7/16 high 30 LED 3rd brake light inset into the center back edge of my sugar scoop I am satisfied that I will be noticed in this land of raised pickup trucks.

Not exactly plug and play. Mine are held in by the plastic chrome trim rings that I modified to fit the openings.
