On my LS3 480 hot cam 72 coupe, I put the magnaflow 16841 big block quad tip exhaust system (2.5" SS with cross pipe). I love the cross pipe design.... But
I hate the sound. At idle the car sounds oddly muffled. At throttle, you get a nice sound. At 2200 rpm I get a terrible drone.
I can't handle it. Got to Go!
Who has what?
I want a quiet cruise sound with no drone, a nice throaty sound under throttle, and no drone on constant 2200 rpm throttle.
We love the dual chambered systems and it's the most requested system we have in our shop. I have it on my 72 but I also have full length headers. It's a throaty sound similar to that of the original side exhaust cars... and when it's coming out of the rear it sounds mean.
I'm posting you a video link of this car and the 1971 (the 71 has stock manifolds).. but you have to remember, sound of exhaust is controlled by several things.. A) Camshaft/engine B) Exhaust manifolds/headers.
What makes this system neat is that it sounds great with both headers and stock manifolds.
My personal favorite is the stage II system with the 69 side pipe mufflers instead of the chambered. It offers a more throaty sound. (the 72 below)
Obviously as mentioned above, the camshaft will distort the sweetness of the exhaust too..
I think it will sound sweet.. But there is always a chance anyone won't like it.. the 480 has a nice rumble to it to start with.. and rumble plays good with the stage II system. I don't think you'll be disappointed.. The LS3, in the stock car has a different sound than you'd hear out of a C3... but the stage II would only highlight it in my humble opinion. +
The only issue would be the manifolds.. what are you running on this engine? Can you adapt our system to the manifolds... I'm not sure.. email me at support@willcoxcorvette.com and I'll see what we can do.
BTW.. that is one sweet power train in a C3.. How's this deal, because I know you are scared.. who wouldn't be... You buy it, you put in on and don't like it.. you send it back in 30 days for a full refund..

Hard to beat that deal. I've got ARH headers tied to this monster! I've got slip fit extension pipes tied to the headers and the magnaflow system.
I'm not sure I want to rip the entire exhaust system out. I just want to tie new mufflers to the x-pipe setup I already have. I've already dropped $900 on the existing system. A whole new setup is more than I want to bite off at this time.
By the way, I can't get your stage II you tube to load???
I have Flowmaster Delta 40's straight from stock C5 manifolds on my LS conversion. Still need to add the cross pipe. Sounds great around town but annoying on highway. x pipe may change the sound hopefully quiet.
I had Delta flow 50s on my old Gen1 Sb and loved the sound. The ne wLS motor has a custom set of headers and pipes and their mufflers which so far sound awesome. It was very high dollar though but it looks and sounds great. I posted a small video and sound bite a while back of it.
I'm assuming I could call our buddy Steve at ARH and have him build me the exhaust setup from the diff back to the exhaust tips.
Have you driven it enough to get a gauge on what the drone level is at 2k rpm? I'm also guessing drone levels in coupes are drastically different than in verts.

Chris
I have not driven it yet at a steady 1500 or 2000 rpm so I cannot give you any details on drone, or if there is one. Mine does have a X or crossover pipe so to say. I doubt Steve has the plan for the exhaust system. Obviously mine is custom and was built to my car. I don't know if they saved the dimensions. I know they did on the headers and you see how well they fit to your car so I would probably not risk having it made for your car unless you could deliver it to them.
My system is 3 inch back to the trans mount and they put a reducer down to 2 1/2 in the hole of the crossmember so you can't see it. They tried 3 inch but ground clearance out back was reduced. They said this system would be good for 600+ HP. I'm good with that.
For all options, I will probably remove the magnaflow quad tips and mount them to the new mufflers. I will also be modifying the under car 2 1/2" pipes to gain better clearance. The Corsa option is the most expensive unless I find some cheap used ones. The other options aren't going to be too bad of cost.
I would try a used stock style muffler clamp it on before spending any real money. More power/air you move through there the louder its going to want to be. Cam profile etc can effect sound too.
Should keep you from spending a ton on systems with the risk you wont lke it. Doubt theres any noticeable power difference. Sometimes loud is equated with fast not always so true
The stock 1973 exhaust hangers are a perfect substitute rear hanger for custom exhaust. It can be used on just about any C3 and offers you the ability to us a C clamp on the muffler to hang it. It works perfect on 68-72 cars...
Mine is to loud? That is interesting to hear. Now I can't wait to hear it under full load at 6000 rpm. I have gotten on it briefly to about 4000 and yes it makes noise but it is not offensive. IMO.

Before installing these the drone in my car was worse than the 2nd gen car I had with true duals dumping at the rear end, now I can actually hear the sounds from the forged pistons and the fuel injectors.
Chris, I have flowmaster delta flow 50`s, but as you know I dont have LS motor installed yet. Let me know if you want to hear them. I am in Michigan at the moment but will be back in town next week
