[rant] Challenged by a 2001 Ford Lightning this AM....
(for reference)
2. That damn truck was faaaast but this 20 year old meathead wanted me to race him on a city street in morning rushhour.
3. Am I the only one who thinks it doesn't count when your daddy buys you a brand new rocket? I mean, OK if your dad gives you the keys to the family owned '85 Corvette and then you go work on it to make it fast - but guys whose parents spend 40K for a C5 and then they scoff at your hard earned car are no cool in my books.
This kid goes to me at the gas station 'just how fast is it'? I say 'fast enough' and he goes 'well, we'll see about that on Major Mac (the street in question'.
All I was thinking was let me shove daddy's credit card up your f-ing asz and see what you come up with on your own. :nono:
I raced one on the freeway, I was impressed. If my car was stock he would have ripped me a new 'A" hole. But instead I made him look like an idiot......
Have fun and forget it.
There is allways someone out there that is willing to dump more $$$$ into a car than you................oh well
enjoy........... gp
I don't mind a little jousting here and there but its the 'my poopie don't smell' attitude of guys who never had to give up a week's pay for a tranny fix that drive me nuts.

There's another hotrod truck coming out to watch out for. The Dodge Ram is getting a Viper engine option. It's quicker than a Lightning. 0-60 in 5 seconds flat. Trucks are the new musclecar...mainly because (I am guessing) they don't have the same emissions rules.
with his buddies at the country club. He may never feel the sense of
accomplishment that many of us share. In this sense he is the poorest
of the poor.
Well, most of us would not run out and spend $40k on our own ride, never
mind your kid's. When my boys come of age, they will have helped with
almost every aspect of auto repair/restoration. At that time, I just might
splurge and buy them a "C4-C5 project car" (10-12 years from now).
Right now, my youngest is the most interested here he is helping me
scrape out a big rust bubble last week:
scraping rust (steel car)
Someday - the tables will turn, and I can help them out - spending their $$ on their 'vette.

But then again, even though it looks like a kit car gone bad, Ford sold more Mustangs than GM sold F-bodies COMBINED (in 2001).
Its not referencing the plates that bothers me. God knows they have kept me OUT of races many times. Its the guys who have never turned a wrench or spent any of their own earned money with attitude that bothers me.
There are LOTS of faster car than mine out there and this is the game. I just have a lot more respect for the guy with a 3K Camaro who worked a 305 to low 14s than I do for a guy whose dad bought him a new Lightning and brags about his poopie.
I have enough to hang with a Lightning but I'd prefer to test it at the track or some place deserted.
(That should kick off a lively discussion!).

I build circle track motors so anytime I am challenged I just rattle off a couple of customers names and then ask him if he thinks mine would be stock (I keep my L-82 at a low idle so it has quite a lope to it, that and the sidepipes make it sound a lot more than what it is.) Then I ask him if he really wants to find out to lay a G-note on the hood. (let see him explain to daddy what he needs a G-note for  ) They always have to check something on their car as I am leaving.
Bottom line is "Always keep em guessin"
