i have a 1971 corvette that i am preparing strictly for occasional street driving.i am building a 406" AFR head, roller cam engine should be ready next month. i have completely gone thru the normal sway bars, ball joints,A-frame upper lower bushings ,rebuilt rear differentials with 3.55 gears and all bushings now i have question;this was a small block car therefore has U-straps on drive shaft, quarter shafts.can i simply remove and replace joint with new spicer and then use big block caps with grade 8 bolts and nuts (because i would never be able to put threads to except stock big block bolts) i am sure someone has beef up these joints and don't want to drop rear and replace output joints with big block style on quarter shafts to differentials joint.very differ cult getting under car 68yo combat vet

The big block yokes have a machined surface where the caps bolt to. The small block strap style yokes are not machine finished so the big block caps will not fit flush and the u-joint won't be cradled correctly.
I had a discussion in the past with Gary (GTR1999) well known trailing arm, differential and steering box builder, and he said the straps are fine unless you are running crazy high HP numbers. With your contemplated build the straps will probably be fine.
i cannot thank you enough you save me agonizing time laying on my back just to find out what you told me.i have turbo 400 so that should take some of the strain off that u- joint with 500hp and goodyear radials .
