I'm in the process of replacing the weatherstripping on my 80, and when I got to taking it off the car by the rear part of the window, and there is a metal plate with holes all over it. Now, my question is this, do I take tha plate totally off and just use the stripping I have(feels like a metal plate inside the stripping), or do I leave the plate on and just glue right to it? I took a picture so you can see exactly what spot I'm talking about. Thanks in advance!
The weatherstrip is overmolded around the metal plate. Take the old plate off and pitch it (save the screws). There should be some small holes in the new WS to accept the screws.
On both the 1979 and 80 cars I have done, this plate is held on
by three rivets. I removed the side interior trim panels and drilled
the rivets out. I used a combination of weatherstrip adhesive and
new rivets to install the new weatherstrip. If I remember
correctly, the rivets are the next size larger in diameter than
1/8, 3/16" diameter. I pushed the rivets in from inside the
car and thru the metal backing plate of the new weatherstrip. I
clamped the new weatherstrip to the side of the car while I installed
new rivets.
