My '80 has a "faded" doeskin interior in decent shape (no major tears or cracks). The leather on the seats and door panels is almost yellow! In doing a interior rework, should I go back with doeskin or another color and if changing colors, which color (the exterior paint is red)? Obviously, if I choose another color, then all the molding will need to be either dyed or replaced which adds dollar$ and hours to the job. I had originally planned on replacing the carpet first and slowly go from there. Any suggestions, tips or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks! :seeya
i am in the midst of converting the "burnt" red interior of my 80 vette to black . let me tell you it is not an easy conversion. pillar posts , t top center panel , top panels , door panels , dash , rear carpet , seats , steering wheel ,etc , etc... all cost big wood new and are hard to find in good used condition . i would suggest to stay with your doeskin interior , just replace the worn parts and clean up the others. besides doeskin in a red vette makes for a sweet combo.
But it will stick to your seat if you leave it in the sun with the seat against the dash pad, ask me how I know. :mad One thing to consider, new parts look new and old parts look old so your colors will not match. My car had new seat covers when I bought it and I bought new door panels and re-dyed most everthing else but the re-dyed parts and new door panels did not match perfect but good enough for me.
I used to own an interior buisness and staying with the same color is the best way to go. Everything will need to be dyed so the colors match; however, dying sompthing the same color is a lot easier than dying it a different color. If you want to save money stick with the same color but if you are not satisfied with the origional do what ever makes you happy - its your car. You could always go with a nice crushed velvet fabric (haha). Just kidding, just do what makes you happy.
If you went with black I wouldnt think you would need to change everything. it might not look original though. If you at least did the carpet, door panels, and seats, it would probally look ok but I would just die the rest black. you could probally die the dash pad until you come up with more $ for new. just a thought.
I am rather partial to doeskin. It is a light colour and does not absorb heat readily. My arm-rests are dyed as are the windshield pillar trims. I have not tried the dye on seats so will leave that to others to advise. My round-to-it is the sunvisors. Actually if you stay with the same colour, the repairs are inexpensive.
Just a thought, dye the leather seats, door panels and trim the same color and put in a red carpet. I think it would look cool. A nice contrasting interior that matches the exterior paint.
