Default Carlisle Swaps

I'm toying with the idea of selling my SB Coupe in order to get a BB vert.

Anyone ever buy or sell their car at Carlisle? As a seller, what are the pros/cons of the corral versus the auction? Any tips on how not to get ripped off on the money exchange are welcome.

I bought mine at Carlisle. It went thru the auction but didn't sell. I struck a deal with the owner in the "no-sale" lot outside the auction.

I think the car corral is a better deal for most sellers. Auction averages less than 50% sales (I think), is dominated by the dealers, and you pay a hefty commission.

As a seller, the critical part is making sure you get money for your car. Do you expect a buyer to hand you $10,000 in cash? How do you know the certified check he gives you is good? Transaction is likely to happen on Saturday or Sunday when banks are closed.

In my case, i hit up the ATM for $1000 and gave that to the seller. He left the car with a 3rd party in Carlisle (a gas station owner) while I went home and wired the balance to him. My bank screwed up and it got to be quite a hassle but eventually he got his money and I got my vette. He was just trying to protect himself, which is what you will need to do as a seller.

It ends up being a bit tricky for both buyer and seller because you are dealing with someone you don't know at a remote location. Not your home, not his home, and both of you are thinking you will never see the other again if there are any problems!

And buyers - There is a bank window on the fairgrounds where you can get a cash advance on your credit card, but the fees are PROHIBITIVE!!!

Its not that bad, actually. Carlisle fairgrounds has an on-site bank that makes a few million $$ in loans. The checks are cut right there and you can cash them on the spot and walk with cash. Of course there is the credit card cash advance option, but as stated, it ain't cheap. Also, remember, there are folks literally walking around with bankrolls of cash.

I managed to scrounge up $25K last year to buy my 96 LT4.

Mark,
Thats wild. Knowing you, it would have to be unorthodox. Whew...

Leaving a Corvette at the service station. If I was the seller, I would rather give you the car than leave it at a service station.

I have tried all the different ways buying and selling , but for the past years I just carry cash [ and, also, my 357 magnum ]

I sold a Vette at Corvette Expo Knoxville last spring. The man wrote me a check on his Corvette business. I gave him the car and kept the title until his check cleared. Fed Ex'd the title the following week.

Bought my 70 at Carlisle... gave the guy some money down... with the VIN on the receipt. Went to his place in Donegal PA to pay the rest with my certified check at his bank.

Not the normal transaction... but that's the way it played out.

I agree that the best deals are on the hill in the back.... not the auction.

I bought my '82 at Carlisle in '97. It was in the corral area on Saturday. I had brought $6K in cash with me and I took a $4k cash advance on my credit card for the balance. I believe it cost $300 for the cash advance. We drove the car home that night. It sure beat driving from Albany, NY to South Carolina (where the car owner lived) to pick up the car the next week.

Jay, what are you asking for your Vette? I was trying to talk Mindy into Vette #2 last night. One of these days she'll cave.

Len,

My wife doesn't think I could part with it, but I'd hand over the keys for $14k. There is the possibility that I'd have post-Vette-sale depression. :yesnod:
