My 72 Vette had a very old Torquer Manifold when I purchased it, there was no room for an air filter either. I replaced this with a Edelbrock Performer EPS Intake Manifold #2701. The carb is a Holley 4160 but still no room for an air filter. Also the distributor which I think is original with a cable drive for the tach also just fits under the hood. It does not have the big hood, what can I do? Regards Greg
Are you using a drop-base air cleaner assembly? The Torquer would normally fit within the confines of the '72 smallblock hood. I can't say how the 2701 fits as I don't know the height dimensions of that intake. As to the distributor, if it isn't hitting anything, then it fits.
You might want to make sure you have the right engine mounts for that thing. That's the only thing I can think of that would make the engine sit higher than it should, causing clearance issues.
i have a Performer #2102 manifold with orig quad jet carby,
original drop base air cleaner, orig dissy under the shield top.
all this fits under the std flat 72 hood.
On my 74, I have a performer 2101, Holley 670 Street Avenger and a 3" Edelbrock standard round air cleaner. I had to replace the wing nut with a regular nut to get it to fit. I was told you could put in a 2" round filter element and trim the screw to gain an inch. Might help.
Thanks for the replies Gents. I found info on the internet that says the Edelbrock 2710 is 5.5mm higher than the 2101. I am using a Holley 4160 part number HLY-0-80457S on the 2701 so I could gain 5.5 mm by changing out the manifold. This there a carb with a lower profile as I cant find dimensions on the carbs. Regards Greg
Also I am using a drop filter but even without the filter the throat of the carb just touches the hood. Engine mounts are stock and fan fits within the shroud so looks like engine height has not changed over the years.
Hi Greg, I just replaced my Qjet with a Street Demon, it was probably close to an inch lower the the Qjet. Sorry I didn't measure either but I'll bet if you send Street Demon an e-mail they will send you the height dimension

Hi, Are you happy with the Street Demon carb? Is it reliable? I did send an enquiry but did not hear back from them.
I have the same performer manifold with an old Holley 1850 on my 350 and it fits under the stock hood with a drop base air cleaner. There is no room for the big nut on the top and I had to trim a little from the flange base of the air cleaner to get it to fit. The air cleaner brushes against the hood lining.
I also had to dimple the underside of the air cleaner base to allow enough room for the manual choke lever to open and close. That's what the round end of the engineers hammer is for!

Yes thanks but then I couldn't find the dimensions of the Holley 4160 to compare, mine has non adjustable floats. I will try to contact Street Demon Tech line on Monday as I need to know if its a direct swap onto the EDL 2701 air intake. Cheers Greg
I have my parts to use and went with a LS6 reproduction intake and a QuickFuel carb.
It fits fine even with a 1/2 spacer.
I put a torker on a 68 L36 back with a 800 cfm Holley in 1973 and the hood would not close even without an air filter! Are you using the stock hood? I recently bought a 69 L36 and was thinking about making a few changes.
I have 2701, with 3" air filter. I still have 10mm from the top of the air cleaner to inside the hood. I've made a small plastic adapter from the carb to the cleaner, I think it is 15mm high.
Here is the air cleaner I have in my car.
