I recently had some work done under the hood, and the mechanic say that he felt someone has worked on the engine before and put in a different, or bigger cam. Is there anyway to check this out without a tear down? :flag

The only way would be to put a dial indicator on the valve retainer and check the lift. Even this is not a real good way. But if the lift is a lot higher than stock a new cam might have been installed. Other than that it would be kind of hard.
