i was getting the car rust proofed and when it was up i had a look under...noticed that there is a crack in my composite spring(one piece)...
it is on the driver's side and is abput 75% from the centre towards the wheel...it is about 1 inch across and maybe 2 inches long..it is not right through though only a sliver..maybe 35% through...
would this be from the torque????
here is the problem...
1. go with another composite spring...do they make different strengths??
2. put the original metal leaf back in...
3. can i get a one piece metal one custom made???
I would stay with the composite spring. If you know where it came from they might warranty the spring. There are different spring rates but I don't know about strength. Mine is from Vette Brakes and is the 330 lb spring. It has been in there for 5 years. Not a lot of miles but a lot of abuse.
I would look into finding the manufacturer, however if the spring was jacked up or exposed to high heat, that voids the warranty. But I have a TRW spring on my 79 and it's been on there for ten years without a single problem. So I would replace the one piece with another composite spring?
Never happened to me - but it did to a friend. Hey Ken. TRW composite spring.
He replaced it with a steel one (7 leaf - I think).
This is the reason I really don't want to do it myself.
Tough decision. It will be interesting to see how many people here
have had this happen.
When i replaced my 2 cracked leaves, i added an extra 1......also if you are replacing the steel springs do not forget to relace the thin rubber bushes between the leaves......also,while you are at it,check the "ears" on the diff for cracks....it is a very common failure point.....john :chevy
