Looks like my power steering cylinder is leaking more from age than use. Looking for tips on removal, and rebuild myself or order already rebuilt.
Try a search on the "Forum". There was some comments in the past year about using a liquid additive to the fluid. I know nothing about its effectiveness.
Yes there are some good stop leak additives on the market that do work. They work by swelling the seals and the one I used lasted over a year before it started leaking again. I think I used Bars but can't be sure. However, if you stay with name brands, you should find that they'll give you a temp fix assuming its not too bad of a leak to start with.
My suggestion for a long term fix would be complete replacement. Willcox has a new cylinder (no core deposit) for $115 and has their 10% off sale on as well ($103.50 net)! Easy to change if your hoses are in good shape (they have those too) and you're good to go. They can also be rebuilt, but, then your car will be down longer and some people have had them leak again.
Down time isn't an issue when the snow flies. The cylinder only has 37,000 miles on it, more an issue of leaking seals than wear. But if it may leak again replacing the seals may not be a good option. I was thinking of getting a hose kit, disturbing those old hoses might start them leaking.
I started with a leak in one of the front lines. after that was fixed then the cylinder leaked and then the valve. ended up just replacing everything when it was all said and done. Of course would have been much easier to do it all at once. While you have it apart might want to consider replacing all of it.
