power steering and steering column issue
I hope you specialists can help me!
I´m getting crazy with the German repair shops.
It seems that no one can do the job right.
A repair shop aligned my front axle geometry and replaced the power steering valve and the steering box.
They cut the steering tie rod thread at one side and nearly turned out the complete thread at the opposite side.
Now the turns of my steering wheel are different at right and left side direction. This situation is unacceptable for me.
The repair shop says it is caused by a not original steering column.
Do you think it makes sense?
My 1970 Corvette has got a notch at the steering coupler and the steering box to prevent a misalignment, right?
Best regards,
Andreas

Can you post a picture of the gear box and steering column? The couple, column and box all ave notches in them but they can be installed 1 turn out.

Pictures will be a great help. 1969 thru 1975 Corvette steering systems were nearly identical through those years. Also let me point out that the Corvette steering gear is unique for Corvettes only. Also, the steering column is very unique for Corvettes only.
So somebody did not just slap any old steering column or any old gear into your 1970.
I might suggest that you review and study this paper that I authored several years ago. I walks you through the Corvette steering components and how they are assembled correctly.

Dear Jim,
thank you very much for your help.
My steering column is not tilt/tele, so the failure rate must be even lower...
Please also have a look at the front axle geometry they adjusted.
The steering feeling is more precise around the steering wheel center position, but I need force to steer out of the center and then the steering reaction is not proportional and the car is doing a swerve.
The repair shop told me they also changed the ratio at the power steering rod to minimize the nervous/too fast steering reaction.
I´m really frustrated...
Best regards,
Andreas
