so i am basicly taking this muncie out like i did it on my 68 camaro but pulling the tranny back and then droping it. On the camaro it was much easier because the crossmember was bolted in and not welded. well here is where i am stuck at right now. After some problems with stuck bolts on the trans mounts i was ready to un bolt the last part of the trans at the bellhousing. I was planing on taking the trans and bell houseing off together but I can't unbolt the second for the bottom bolt on the drivers side ( the bolts that conect the bellhouseing to the engine block) there is no room up there to get a socket and a pivoting socket up there to unbolt it. The firewall is just too close to the bolt. I even tryed useing a wrench from the topside, going from behind the heads. I have droped the trans as low as it will go and still can not get to the bolt???? Should i take the trans off from the bell houseing first then take the bell houseing off, i need to get to the clutch because it is blown. And if i do that I still might not be able to get that bolt off. It is the bolt right above the clutch fork. Man camaros have so much room up there...and in the engine bay..... oh yeah and behind the dash.... and just about everywhere else too... very easy cars to work on. Don't get me wrong I love my corvette and am haveing a great time restoring/modifying it. chevy all the way :chevy ......
I just took my tranny out a few days ago. I didnt have any problem getting to that bolt with a regular wrench. I assume the cars are the same, mines a 69. You can try removing the trans from the bellhousing its just four bolts and see if that gives you more room. You kind of have to rotate the tranny to get it to go back far enough so that you can slide it out with the bellhousing still on the block.
Re: More trans removal questions (Jester69Stingray)
You'll need to remove the shifter also to be able to rotate & slide the tranny back. I'd go with removing the tranny from the bellhousing first, it'll be easier to get to the bellhousing bolts, & to remove the tranny from under the car. :)
I think you have to remove tranny first. The bellhousing on my car with not drop straight down because of the exhaust pipes. You have to angle the bell out.
I removed the engine in 1996 for a rebuild. I left the trans/bell housing in the car. I had no problems removing the bolts in the bell housing.
I don't know why yours would be different.
It will be a tight deal, but the tranny will come out - back, rotate, then down - if you pull the shifter and leave the bellhousing in place. After you get the tranny out, you can lower the rear of the engine slightly - watch that you don't force the distributor against the firewall and crack it - to get the bellhousing bolts off - replace clutch, etc... I strongly encourage you to at least put a new throw-out bearing in as long as you are taking out the tranny anyway.
how do i lower the engine more once the trans is out.... it is pretty low already.... i already took off the distributor cap :yesnod: I was told to lower it more put a jack on th harmonic balancer and carefully jack it up
At the far rear of your M21 there will be a bolt that prevents you from backing the tranny an extra 3/8 inch. remove this bolt. ensure that the shifter is unbolted and removed (via the top). Unbolt the tranny FROM the bellhousing. Pull back the tranny as far as you can go; then as you slowly drop the back-end of the engine you drag the front of the tranny down the rear face of the bellhousing.
ok i am back in town (went surfing)... what does this bolt go to? and i think i found a problem. the front pice that bolts to the case and the trough out bearing slides on is broken at the base and pices of metal are all over the place in my bell housing :(
