Recently my motor began to smoke (blue) on start up and pulling away from stop light. It became worse in a months time so I decided to dig in and replace the seals. The first cylinder I removed the springs from I found no O-rings and on the intake there was a plastic ring around the guide. On the next cylinder no O-rings but it had the plastic rings on both guides.I put o-rings and umbrellas on those two and have stopped to ask the question. What are these hard plastic rings around the guide. They are only as tall as the guide, leaving the top of the guide exposed. Are they some type of plastic umbrella that is missing the top part?I did find tiny bits and pieces of hard plastic when I pulled valve covers.Dont know if that was crumbled O-rings or whats left of those plastic thingys. The heads are rebuilt 1.94/#487 w/z-28 springs and have only 4000 mi.
Well finished up the seal job and happy to report that no more smoke! Very happy . Having headers made it a little more fun for sure and the fact that the snap-on spark plug hose sprung a leak and had to wait a few days for the truck, but in the end all's good! Luckily it sprung a leak before I removed the springs from that cylinder.
