I've driven my mostly stock (slightly bigger cam, bored 30 over) 200hp small block 4 speed for about 1600 miles this year with no problems since I replaced the original (rebuilt by goat hill classics and lasted a month) fuel pump with an NOS AC Delco pump. Original carb rebuilt to factory specs, original distributor - not sure how it's set up except I think my guy said it's at full advance.
Today, I had to pull into a parking lot and look up some directions and it died. I had it in neutral, idle was normal, around 900, temperature was under 210, and it died. It didn't sputter or idle rough, it just died - almost like I turned off the key.
It started right back up. Later, when I had to brake harder than normal, the rpm's dropped to 500.
Is this a sign of the fuel pump going bad again?
Something else that happened this week that could possibly be related was I went to start it and nothing happened when I turned the key. Radio was on, but the starter did nothing. Turned the key back to off and tried again it started right up. There's a small chance I could have been in a zone and didn't push the clutch in, but is there any thing in the ignition that could cause both problems?
I don't think this is the problem but why would anyone set the dist for full advance on a pretty much stock motor. There is no reason for this. I have set up a lot of 500+ HP Sb motors and never set them for full advance. A lot of so called experts have screwed up a lot of good carbs and ignitions.
