Changing the lube I my '78 L82 4 speed. I was surprised to find a drain plug in it as most everything I read indicated I would need to vauum the old oil out. Now I am not sure what kind of tranny I have Muncie, Saginaw , aftermarket or one with a drain added by a PO.

Numbers on the transmission cast into the case are: W G DIV, 1304065903. There is also a flat ground section with. 82977. This could very well be a date code of Aug 29, 1977 which would make sense as my car was born October 10th 1977.

Bell housing has 469697 on it.

Is this a stock tranmission ?
What kind is it?

Thanks much
Jim

The 903 means it is an alum case.

If you want to know if it is original to your car, look here.. The top number will have your partial vin. The translation for the bottom 2nd set of characters, WD2182 on mine, are:

W-Warner
D-April (they do not use the letter i)
21- day of month
8- 1978
2- 2nd shift.

My car has a 5/15/78 trim tag.

If you have an Oct build then it might read W, J or H , day of month, 7, then shift #.

Thanks guys.

I dont have my jack stands so I am only able to raise the car the height of a large block of wood. Wont get under a car suported only by a jack. Cant read the vin numbers as I cant get close enough. The other numbers areWJ7077. Maybe the first and last 7's are 2's. That would make it a september 20th made trans. Very close to the build date but certainly feasible. I will check again when I can raise it higher and get a good look. Have a 4 post lift on order. That will make it easier.

There should be a raised block/boss on the right side about mid tranny that'll have the partial vin stamped into it. You can't miss it.......You'll know for sure then if it came with the car and it'll start with 17S??????. Just a little heads up for ya.
